Last year, when Hemet High School’s Associated Student Body held a dress drive, its organizers were unsure how many students would come to claim a free prom dress.
By the time the day of the dance came, it was estimated that nearly 1 in 6 girls were wearing a dress that had been donated from the community.
This year, the school will host its third annual dress drive, which is being organized by senior Shombree Wojcik and junior Ashley Thomas to provide more free dresses to students who would not be able to afford a prom dress.
The donations are being accepted from now until March 16. The school will have the dress giveaway after school on March 21.
A year ago, the school collected more than 250 dresses and gave out more than 100.
The extras are in storage and will be available to choose from this year as well.
Shombree said students who take dresses have to leave a $5 deposit. The money will be returned if the dress is re-donated.
Free alterations will be available.
“Prom is such a special event throughout high school and it’s something you look forward to,” said Shombree, the school’s senior class president. “We don’t want anyone to have an excuse why they can’t go. I’m just glad Hemet High can help these girls out.”
Dresses can be dropped off at Hemet High School, 41701 E. Stetson Ave., or the law offices of Davis & Wojcik, 1001 E. Morton Ave., Hemet.
