The Hemet high School Choirs kicked off their concert season with !Cantar! in the new performing arts theatre on Thursday night, October 12. The theme of the evening was World Music where students choose a country to research music from, selected and learned the music and performed it in front of about 200 enthusiastic audience members.
The program began with Zimbian Fold Song, Lusaka, Africa translated to “All those who sing with spirit have a right to be called the Children of God” and was sung by the entire combined choirs. After a personnel shift to the Women’s Choir, the girls sang “Il Yat Un Con Qui Chante, a French Canadian folk song and Kimmineero, a English Canadian Folk song. Kathry Meyer then performed a piano solo of FantaiieImpromptu, Op. 66 of French music. The Concert Choir sang “Im a Soon Cum Bak (He Will Soon Come Back), a Patois Dialect from Jamaica; Duermete mi Nino, a folk lullaby from the Dominican Republic and !Cantar!, from Cuba..
The Chamber Singers capped off the evening with three Japanese songs, Momoshiki Ya, Hisakata No, and Okuyama Ni.
The grand finally of the combined choirs closed the evening with a song and dance entitled, “Jai Ho! (Dance With Me) from Bollywood and the film “Slumdog Millionaire.”
