The city of Hemet announced last week that Hemet High School is ranked 1,990 out of the top 2,500 schools in the country on a list put out by Newsweek on May 7, 2013.

For its rankings, Newsweek sent out a survey to more than 5,000 high schools in the U.S., with about 2,500 schools responding in 2013. Nearby Redlands High School also made the Newsweek list, coming in the top half at number 953.

The survey scores were then weighted and calculated using several criteria including on-time graduation and college acceptance rates. In addition, instead of averaging the number of courses offered, this year Newsweek consideredvthe percentage of students enrolled in AP, IB or Advance International Certificate courses. The final scores thenvdetermined Newsweek's final rankings. You can read more about it at www.Newsweek.com.

Hemet's Mayor, Robert Youssef made mention of this achievement at the city council meeting on May 14.

"It is important to recognize that we have excellent schools in Hemet," Youssef said. "From our elementary schools, to our charter schools, Hemet Unified School District continues to help our young people excel and prepare them for the future, and the presence of good schools in our community is an important factor in recruiting new families and businesses to join our great community".

The Newsweek recognition, comes alongside of further positive news about Hemet schools that include that the HUSD was recognized for achievement in the "The USDA Challenge," part of Michelle Obama's "Let's Move Campaign," is a voluntary program established in 2004 to recognize schools that participate in the National School Lunch Program that have created healthier school environments through the promotion of nutrition and physical activity.

Hemet Unified School District was honored by state and federal officials on May 14 for its high placement in the Healthier U.S. School Challenge because school meals were recognized for their quality and nutrition. Hemet elementary schools, for example earned 13 Gold Awards of Distinction, the highest designation possible, and one silver award.
