Rival Game

Out of all the football games, one particular game always seems to be the most important to not only the football team, but also to the school’s pride: the rivalry game versus West Valley High School. Friday, October 18th, the Bulldogs brought home the win in an away game against the Mustangs (or should I say, ponies?).

Although West Valley scored the first touchdown, the Bulldogs didn’t let them get the best of us. Majority of the game was spent scoring touchdowns back and forth, first West Valley, then Hemet, and from then on taking turns scoring touchdowns. The game was definitely an intense one; hardly anyone was seated in the last half of the game. The Bulldogs were up by a touchdown until the last 40 seconds of the game when West Valley evened the score, putting the game into overtime. The rules of high school overtime are as followed: each team is given possession of the ball at the 25-yard line, along with the opportunity to score a touchdown. If both teams score, then they’re each given another shot; if one team scores and the other fails, then the scoring team takes the win. In this particular game, both teams scored on their possessions in the extra period, but West Valley ultimately blundered in a fail attempt at a 2-point conversion in order to take the game. In the end, Hemet High took the win 42-41!

The win was definitely a big one, not only because West Valley has been our biggest rival for years, but because of the hard loss that we faced against the Tahquitz Titans the prior week. There’s only one big game left in the season: the home game against San Jacinto High School, commonly known as “Battle of the Bell”. Will the Bulldogs win back the highly desired victory bell? Find out during the last home game of the season on November 8th!
