Patrick Searl has served on the elected boards of the Hemet hospital and Lake Hemet water districts. Now he can add Hemet Unified School District to his list of community service. Searl was appointed to the school board Tuesday in a 6-0 vote of trustees. Nine candidates interviewed for the appointment, vacated when Lisa DeForest resigned in February after moving out of the district. The term runs through December 2016. Trustee Joe Wojcik cited Searl’s experience and the short duration of the term in nominating him for the post. “There’s nuances to it,” Wojcik said of elected office. “The learning curve will be short for him.” The other candidates were Anthony Connell, John Graham, Heather Hughes, Sandra Males-Madrid, Curt Nordal, Tammy Rivers, Keith Rossi and Christian Ruddell. They took turns answering three questions during an open forum concerning their qualifications, what would make them a good trustee and their thoughts on issues facing the district. Although Searl was the only person nominated, trustees praised all of the candidates. “I’m not an educator, but I’ll give you all an ‘A,’ ” Wojcik said. “All of you brought a different, unique perspective. You’re all great.” Trustee Megan Haley added: “We’d be honored to have any of you on the board.” Searl said he was excited to be appointed. “I’m looking forward to trying to make a difference,” he said. Searl, 59, graduated from Hemet High in 1974. His family has farmed in the region for decades. His wife, Melissa, is the library technician at Bautista Creek Elementary School. Searl served on the Valley Health System board from 2001 to 2008 and the Lake Hemet Municipal Water District board from 2005 to 2011. He resigned from both posts before his term expired. “I really enjoy community service, you could say it’s my hobby,” Searl said during his interview. He cited his previous service as a strength. “You have to have passion and desire that you want to do the job,” Searl said. “Have your opinion, speak your mind, but know how to come together.” Hemet Unified board members receive $400 per month and are eligible for districtpaid health and other benefits.
